Picture Your Yard’s Possibilities

Landscapes and all aspects of garden design can either be more conventional -- with large green lawns, water-thirsty flowers and shrubs, large expanses of non-permeable pavers, decorative concrete overlays that less-expensively cover up cracked concrete – or they can morph into climate appropriate plantings, incorporating native plants and water-wise features.

A few ideas... sometimes start with a "blank" canvas...

Edible Gardens: Landscaping… or Foodscaping?

When we look at landscaping circa 2011 and beyond (instead of 1988 when DJ Squire Designs computer imaging journey with landscape contractors first began), intention has shifted – dramatically – and we now desire to help others “see the possibilities” for growing edible landscapes, and food, not lawns.

Recall, in prior times of need -- during World War II -- there was a nation-wide movement to plant “Victory Gardens?”

Now we've morphed into planting "Food, Not Lawns."

Keep in mind, for centuries, in England and other countries, the common folk kept organic cottage gardens that often inter-mingled fragrant flowers, vegetables, fruit tress, and companion plants. Sweat equity, and knowing “how to grow” (and store) your own food, was key to species survival as well as placing healthy cuisine on hand-hewn, natural wood tables.

Today, issues like food security and watching where your water comes from, along with the perils of pesticides, pollution of the watershed, genetically modified crops that alter a plant material’s DNA, and where we have “real” day-to-day choices, are often front and center in people’s inquiring minds (and at least to those who see farther with wisdom eyes.)

To that end, DJ Squire Designs is personally active in the local Ojai Valley Green Coalition, Food and Agriculture committee, and participating on a “Grow Food Party Crew” and attending local Culinary Club events.

We invite people -- contractors and homeowners and renters -- to connect with others in their own local communities who choose to get back to basics… even if you own a mansion.  ;-D
